Happy St. Patrick's Day, Pittsburgh. I'm not sure there's another city in America that goes all in on St. Paddy's Day quite like we do, and honestly, that's exactly why I started Steel City Ledger.
We show up for holidays in a way that you don't find everywhere. I wanted to build something worthy of that. Every Tuesday morning you'll get an email that will show the best of the people, events, and organizations that Pittsburgh has to offer. Glad you’re here!

When the St. Vincent de Paul thrift store in Sharpsburg closed in 2019, most people moved on. Bonnie DeMotte started making calls, and by March 2021 she had almost 400 people, foundations, and local businesses helping to open the Second Harvest Community Thrift Store at 624 Clay Street. She started it to fill a gap in affordable essentials but she’s done way more than that. They have over $2 million in revenue with all of it reinvested back into the community.
Bonnie started the movement but the volunteers amplify it. Just take a look at Sue. She’s 88 years old and volunteers three times a week tagging clothes. When her shift ends, she takes accessories home to tag when she watches TV. A retired electrical engineer tests donated electronics. A retired librarian curates the book section. One couple drives to Trader Joe's every Sunday to pick up near-expired items for the free community fridge out front.
In early 2026, Second Harvest opened Harvest on Main Community Market, stocking healthy groceries and prepared meals at affordable prices. When I think about what makes Pittsburgh special, it’s stories like this where the community comes together. If you’re interested in how you can help them continue to help the community, you can email [email protected]. Feel free to visit them on Instagram as well @secondharvestpgh.

Cats!!!

Smudge from Tabby’s Place
Smudge
Smudge is a sweet 15 year old elderly boy looking for a caring home. He’s not super outgoing but he loves to receive attention. He’s just bad at asking for it. A home with another cat or multiple would be ideal for this sweet guy. Meet him here.
