Happy Tuesday! Over the last week, I’ve gotten a lot of feedback that seeing new restaurant openings is something that you’d specifically like to see. So since yinz asked, it’s time for me to deliver!
Last week the voting revealed that most of our readers would love to see photos of everyone attending events we feature. So make sure to tag us @steelcityledger on Instagram or email me at [email protected] to have your images show up in a future newsletter.

Pittsburgh’s Newest Pizza Joint - Penn Ave Pizza & Steaks
If you start hearing locals saying they got “PAPSed”, this is why. A new pizza place is opening soon in Lawrenceville called Penn Ave Pizza & Steaks, aka PAPS. They’ve been operating on a soft-opening schedule for a little while now, but haven’t had their grand opening just yet.
I first learned about them a few weeks ago when I saw a post in r/pittsburgh talking about a new pizza place. I’m a sucker for good pizza so I had to learn more. The post had a beautiful looking slice of pizza with the comment “I got PAPSed today. A gorgeous slice”. How could you not be excited about that?
I haven’t had a chance to check them out yet but I knew that I needed to write about them this week given the feedback I got about finding new places to eat. So I did some serious internet (Instagram) sleuthing to see what our neighbors are saying.
The vibe is like you got transported to a 50s era soda fountain, eating New York-style pizza that tastes straight from Manhattan. We have people in the comments saying they’ve lived in NYC and this tastes exactly like what they grew up eating. At $4 a slice, it’s a pretty great price if you ask me.
Their cheesesteaks are getting high praise too. They’re made with thin cut ribeye and topped with Cooper Sharp cheese just like what you’d get if you’re in Philly. They’re going for authenticity and it sounds like they’re nailing it.
It’s run by big names in the Pittsburgh pizza scene. Owned by Chris Firman, Brandon Firman, Michael Mercurio (owner of Mercurio’s), and they’ve been working with Massimo Vozza (pizza chef at the now closed Etna Slice House). They’re all Pittsburgh locals who are passionate about making a dang good slice of pizza.
They haven’t yet officially opened and are still operating with a limited menu. They’re open Wednesday through Saturday, 11 am to 9 pm. So plenty of time to grab a slice after work, or maybe on your lunch hour if you work in the area. They’re located at 4065 Penn Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15224.
I plan to check it out real soon and I’d urge you all to do the same. If you do, make sure to tag us @steelcityledger on Instagram or shoot us an email with your photos.

The Photo Desk
One of the cool things about yinz being early subscribers to this little project of mine is that you get to see it evolve in real time. This latest section is a great example of that. I found a beautiful photo on the r/pittsburgh subreddit that I just had to share.
I’ll continue to share these things as I find them and will, of course, shout out the photographer. So if you know of someone whose photos you think I should feature, let me know and I’ll happily do it. We have some really talented photographers here so let’s give them some love.
This one is courtesy of u/macncheeseface on Reddit. If you happen to know macncheeseface or are macncheeseface, let me know and I can get you a proper shoutout!

The Bulletin
Oliver Bath House Reopened
After being closed since 2020, the Oliver Bath House reopened this month. Local swimmers have been flocking to get their laps in. I’m not a huge swimmer but it’s such a cool, historic building. I may just have to stop in. See more here.
Vieux Carre Opens In The Strip District
Vieux Carre is a New Orleans-style speakeasy that just opened. There’s some cool mystique behind it. It’s in the Sea Monkey restaurant but the catch is that it’s behind an unmarked door. Truly like a speakeasy. They’re open Thursday through Saturday nights. It’s on my list to check out! Check out their menu.

The Cat Report

Nina from Nose 2 Tail Cat Rescue
This cute lady is named Nina. She’s a rescue that came to Nose 2 Tail Cat Rescue with a litter of kittens. All of her babies have since been adopted so she’s looking for her home. She almost didn’t make it through her spay procedure but has made a full recovery. She’s a shy but sweet and resilient girl who would love a quiet home with lots of treats. If you’d like to meet her, you can find more info here.
See Yinz next Tuesday
