Morning! How are we feeling about the heatwave that we got? It was HOT but it was a nice excuse to finally buy popsicles at the store again. I can put them down like nobody’s business so I have a personal rule - no popsicles until it gets hotter than 85.

Greater Pittsburgh Food Truck Festival

If your first reaction when you see a food truck drive by is to Google it, I’ve got something for you. The 10th annual Greater Pittsburgh Food Truck Festival is back this year at the Hollywood Casino at the Meadows in Washington. It starts this Friday and runs through Sunday.

It’s a food truck lover’s dream, with 60+ food trucks, most from the Western PA area. Some are representing other states as well. They also have 50+ local vendors selling their wares. Plus live music all day Saturday and Sunday. This was a recap of last year’s if you want a little taste of what it’s like.

For those who love novelty like me, they have a sampler ticket that gets you 3 small bites from participating food trucks. That way you can sample a few things without getting bogged down on 1 heavy meal.

Our food truck culture is one of the best in the country so this is a can’t-miss if you’re a foodie.

Guide to Memorial Day in Pittsburgh

I’ve always thought of Memorial Day as the first real taste of summer. It combines 2 of my loves - history and cooking outside. My perfect way to celebrate is to watch a parade in the morning, visit a memorial, and then spend the afternoon with family/friends in the backyard.

The Lawrenceville Memorial Day parade is one of the oldest-running Memorial Day parades in the country. It starts at 36th and Butler and runs to the Allegheny Cemetery where they’ll be hosting a special military service once it concludes. The parade starts at 10 am.

The South Hills also puts on a parade that kicks off at the Brookline Cannon Memorial at 9:30 am. It then finishes at the Mt. Lebanon Cemetery where they’ll hold a special ceremony. Every year, they choose 1 deceased member of the community to represent the 221 men from our communities who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Hookstown Grange holds an annual Memorial Day Car Cruise that starts at 12 pm at the Hookstown Fairgrounds. See cars of all types during the parade.

The Pittsburgh Zoo’s Red, Wild, and Blue Day starts at 10 am. The animals will be getting special themed enrichment for the holiday. I love seeing zoo animals get special treats. My fiancé worked in zoos and says the animals LOVE special enrichment.

The Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall & Museum will have their annual Memorial Day celebration starting at 11 am. This includes free admission to the museum to pay tribute to the PA fallen service members.

The Photo Desk

We had some super dramatic sunsets over the last few days. Especially on Thursday with how gloomy it was. I’ve seen so many great photos from the weekend it was impossible to choose.

If anyone knows u/Standard-Cockroach64 from Reddit, please send them my way. I’d love to get them the proper love for this gorgeous photo!

Community Bulletin

Stuntpig Closing May 23rd

Luckily, this news isn’t “goodbye”, it’s just “see you soon”. Their shop in Squirrel Hill was getting to be too small for what they needed so they’ve opted to close up shop for now. In the interim, you can expect to see some pop-ups from them while they plan out their next move. Wherever or whatever the next plan is, you best believe we’ll be covering it here. Read more about the Stuntpig story.

Community Grove Coming to McKinley Park

In the Chicken Hill section of McKinley Park, the city just broke ground on construction that’s set to wrap up in the Fall. This project is going to bring a shade pavilion, open lawn space, an outdoor learning space, improved trails, ecological restoration, and picnic seating/gathering spaces. It was once the site of a baseball field that was built by neighborhood residents. Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy is aiming to protect and honor that history in this update. You can read more about it here.

Allegheny County Eastern Bluebirds

The population used to be in jeopardy but they’ve made a comeback. And locals are helping keep the population strong. Just last year, Allegheny County fledged 555 bluebirds. That puts us at 3rd in the state for bluebirds fledged. There isn’t any slowing down in sight, either. Across the county, we have 438 boxes that house Eastern bluebird nests. There’s nothing better than seeing an endangered species bounce back.

The Cat Report

Draco from Trash Cat Rescue

Draco is working to come out of his shell with humans but he is very friendly with other cats. His ideal situation would be a house with another cat who can run around and play with him. It’s not required but if he’s in an only cat situation, he’d do best with a very patient owner who can help him blossom. Meet him here.
