Happy Cinco de Mayo! So perfect for it to fall on “Taco Tuesday”. I hope that if you’re into it, you get some great food and tasty margaritas tonight. Even if tequila and tacos aren’t your thing, we got a jam-packed week of events. You can tell that the summer event season is warming up!

Ramp Season Is Nearly Over

If yinz haven’t gotten your ramps, you’re running out of time! Ramp season is probably only going to be here for another week or two. There are still forageable (I think that’s a word) spots around where you can find them. People are still spotting them at farmers markets as well.

If you don’t know what ramps are, they’re also known as wild leeks. They’re in the same family as onions, garlic, shallots, etc. If you eat them raw, they’re sharp but mellow out as you cook them. The best way I can describe the flavor is a mix between garlic and onion.

So what makes them so special? They’re not commercially grown and are pretty hard to find in the wild because their season is so short in the early spring. They need just the right cold conditions to grow well. And as they’ve grown in popularity, people have been over-foraging them and depleting patches.

If you are lucky enough to find them out in the wild, there are a few things to keep in mind so that people can keep enjoying them for generations to come.

  • Make sure the patch has an abundance of plants

  • Take only a small portion of the patch - most foragers recommend taking less than 10% of the patch

  • Don’t pull the plants out of the ground - leave the bulbs so they continue to grow

  • Clip the leaves before the purple stem to get the best flavor

If you’re on the hunt for ramps, check out this article on how to spot them. They look a lot like lily-of-the-valley and false hellebore, which are both toxic. So best to be careful and know what you’re looking for.

Let’s say you’ve found some ramps, now what do you do with them? If you like garlic or onion in a recipe, you can use ramps. They’re super versatile and taste great in a wide variety of recipes. I found this great site that has recipes for every taste.

Since the season is nearly over, it’s hard to find them in markets. But Harvie, a local grocery delivery service, still has them. You can find them here.

Trivia

When Sam Isaly invented the Klondike Bar in 1929, how much did the chocolate-dipped vanilla ice cream bar cost?

I’ll share the answer in next week’s edition!
