Morning, I hope everyone had a great 4th of July Weekend! With the weather coming down from the high 90s, I started looking for hikes I could do. I came across this post that I wanted to share. As someone who is originally from the West Coast and has seen the Cascades and Rockies, there’s just something special about Appalachia. This feels like home and I’m sure some of you feel that way too. Onward to events!
Butcher and the Rye Is Back!
In 2014, Butcher and the Rye became the first bar in Pittsburgh to win a James Beard Award for Outstanding Bar Program. Then, a few years later, the pandemic hit, and they had to close. Luckily, the wait ends on July 8th.
If you've been on Pittsburgh food Instagram at any point in the last decade or any foodie groups on Facebook, you already know the bourbon wall. They’re owned by the Richard DeShantz group who owns a number of fine dining restaurants around the city. You probably know them best for täkō or Coop De Ville.
I did some digging with people who had visited before they closed. The overwhelming consensus: "vibes were immaculate." I love täkō, so this will be a no-brainer for me. I hope that some of you will check them out soon as well! See their full menu here. And make a reservation here.
New Look Pittsburgh Music Festival
You may be familiar with the Pittsburgh Blues and Roots Music Festival, which has been running for the last 8 years and took over for the discontinued Pittsburgh Blues Festival. It’s getting a new look this year to feature more genres of music but still benefiting the same causes it always has — Band Together Pittsburgh and Autism Pittsburgh (yes, I used an em dash; no, I never use AI to write the newsletter; and yes, I get self-conscious that people will think I do lol).
What you can expect to see is dozens of music acts across multiple stages on July 11th and 12th. Every performer is local, and it’s truly meant to highlight the community that lives on the Autism spectrum, featuring production crew and performers who are on the spectrum themselves.
You can expect to hear blues, rock, Americana, country, jazz, and more. It takes place at Pittsburgh Brewing Company. Of course, there will be good beer but also some good food too. It all starts on the 11th at 1 pm. You can get your tickets here.

Trivia
What year did the Duquesne Incline originally open?
Last Week’s Answer: Fort Pitt - it was torn down and replaced by Fort Lafayette upstream but the name was never changed. Trick question!
On The Market

If you have a window seat anywhere in your house, I’m so jealous of you. It’s been a lifelong dream of mine to get a house that has one. Our house just doesn’t have the right windows for one. Now, this house, it has perfect windows for the bench. Also, the stained glass window in the bathroom is a great touch.

Vote for Pittsburgh’s Best Pizzeria
We love a good bracket here at Steel City Ledger, especially when it involves pizza. Axios Pittsburgh put together a competition for the best pizzeria in the city. I think we can all admit we have our favorites. See how yours stacks up to the rest of the city. Vote here.
Parkway East Closure Starts July 10th
This doesn’t fall into my normal category for this section, but because it’s so impactful, I thought it was worthy of a reminder for everyone. The Parkway will be closed from July 10th to August 3rd between the Squirrel Hill Tunnel and the Edgewood/Swissvale (Exit 77) interchange. Plan your detours now!
Kroger Is Acquiring Giant Eagle
As a former West Coast-er, I have my own opinions on Kroger. They’re big out there, and there’s really no way to avoid them. Personally, I’m partial to local, independent grocers because I like to support our own. And I know that Kroger has a real history in Pittsburgh dating back decades. With this being somewhat of a controversial news headline, I wanted to get everyone’s take on it.
How do you feel about Kroger's acquisition of Giant Eagle?
The Cat Report

📸 Steel City Whisker Rescue
I had the pleasure of getting to spend a little time with Fluff this past weekend at the Bethel Park Petco. She is such a mellow, sweet girl. She definitely will take some time to warm up but with some patience and love, I know that she’ll flourish. She has kind of a grumpy looking face but don’t let it fool you.
See Yinz next Tuesday
