Morning! Did you know that when Pittsburgh was originally named back in 1758, it was likely pronounced Pitts-bur-uh, like how you pronounce Edinburgh? I had no idea, but given that a Scotsman named our city, it tracks.
Feel Good Stories of the Week
🌳 Lise Ceoffe, Chief Forester. You’ve likely never heard her name, but if you’ve ever stared in awe at any of the trees in our public spaces, you’ve seen her work. Lise Ceoffe is our city’s Chief Forester. In charge of trimming, planting, and the downtown Christmas tree among other things, she leads the charge on all things trees. Most recently, brokering an “inch-for-inch” deal with the NFL after having to remove trees for the draft.
🏷️ West Mifflin’s New Thrift Store. The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul Council just opened up a new thrift store yesterday in West Mifflin. It’s only fitting that its location is the former Holy Spirit Church on Old Elizabeth Road in West Mifflin. All of the merchandise for the store is donated, with proceeds going toward vital community services, including food, clothing, furniture, housing and utility assistance, medical care, and transportation.
🥘 Upper St. Clair Teen Tackling Food Insecurity. Rasika Khedikar started the “Cooking with Care” club when she was a freshman. Now four years later, the club has over 100 members and donated over 2,000 pounds of food in partnership with 412 Food Rescue. She’s proof that anyone can make an impact in the community.
Trivia
After removing the “h” from Pittsburgh in 1891, what year was the “h” added back?
Last Week’s Answer: 1891
On The Market

This one needs some love, without a doubt. But I can see the vision. This 1900s-era Victorian is ripe with potential, especially for someone who wants to put in some sweat equity. At $129,900, there’s room there for renovations for the right person with an eye for restoration. The woodwork in the entryway and around the fireplaces is beautiful. I’d love to see this beauty restored to its former glory. See the full listing.

Wegman’s On The Way
Wegman’s hosted their groundbreaking ceremony last week to kick off construction of the first Pittsburgh store. It will open in the Cranberry Springs development in the fall of 2027. It’ll be a full Wegman’s grocery with all of their signature departments. I for one, cannot wait for this to open! It’ll be a little bit of a trek but completely worth it.
Pittsburgh’s Inaugural Cat Walk
This Saturday the 22nd, Brighton Heights locals Heather Costello and Carlin Christy will lead a 90-minute walk to see the cats of the neighborhood. Cats will be perched in windows, in doors, and on porches. 20 homes have pre-registered to have their cats primed and ready. It all starts at 12 pm at Legion Memorial Park in Brighton Heights.
Economic Impact by the NFL Draft
Now that the dust has fully settled from the draft, findings from a study conducted on the economic impacts were released last week. It found that there was over $177 million in economic impact and over $1.5 billion in overall economic value for Pittsburgh. These aren’t exactly a science to get the actual numbers but I suspect they’re in the ballpark of accurate. There was lots to be said, here included, about the impact of the draft on local businesses and our economy. Overall, it was net positive and got our city some well-deserved recognition on the national stage.
The Cat Report

Wanda from Trash Cat Rescue
No one knows exactly how old Wanda is, but she has very sweet, slightly grumpy old lady vibes. Her favorite thing is cuddling in bed and getting head pets. She will hurry to bed if she sees you coming, and she will head butt you until you pet her. Wanda loves to lay on pillows (and sometimes in a spare low-sided cardboard box) and she will give you a grumbly meow if you have to move her. More recently she’s been showing her silly zoomy side as she gets comfortable in her foster home.
Wanda seems to be a bit arthritic and has some trouble jumping onto beds and couches, so she would love the help of some cat stairs, although she has no problem with human stairs or running around. She is doing well on monthly Solensia injections for this. Wanda would do best as the only cat in the house, and might be amenable to respectful children. She can be a bit shy initially, but will open up after her 1-2 days of hiding in spot that feels safe to her. She is a sensitive little lady and can get overstimulated at times - she would prefer to reside in a quiet, calm home environment where Wanda can relax and enjoy the good life.
